ACKNOWLEDGING THE DIVERSE TAPESTRY OF OUR COLLECTIVE

LABOR DAY

SEPTEMBER 7TH

Labor Day 2026 occurs on Monday, September 7. The holiday pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers and is observed each year on the first Monday of September. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day weekend also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans and is celebrated with parties, cookouts, parades, and athletic events.  Enjoy your "No Labor" Day!

PATRIOT DAY - NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE AND REMEMBERANCE

SEPTEMBER 11TH

On September 11, 2001, many lost their lives to the "9/11" attacks. In the days and months after, many people around the world rallied to service in various ways. Every year since then, on this day, we honor the spirit of sacrifice made that day, as well as the sacrifices that continue to be made by community members, first responders, and members of the armed forces and their families.  In observance of this memory, we unite in a national day of service in communities and public lands across the country.

ROSH HASHANA

SUNDOWN ON SEPTEMBER 11TH TO EVENING OF SEPTEMBER 13TH

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is one of Judiasm's holiest days. Meaning “head of the year” or “first of the year,” the festival begins on the first day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which falls during September or October. Rosh Hashanah commemorates the creation of the world and marks the beginning of the Days of Awe, a 10-day period of introspection and repentance that culminates in the Yom Kippur holiday, also known as the Day of Atonement. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are the two “High Holy Days” in the Jewish religion.

Rosh Hashanah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, September 11, and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 13. The exact date of Rosh Hashanah varies every year since it is based on the Hebrew calendar, where it begins on the first day of the seventh month. Rosh Hashanah is almost always in September or October.

NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

SEPTEMBER 15TH - OCTOBER 15TH

National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the culture, history, and contributions of Hispanic Americans. Observed each year from September 15 to October 15, this annual celebration began in 1968 as “Hispanic Heritage Week” (established by Public Law 90-498) and was expanded to a month in 1988.

The mid-September start honors the independence days of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (September 15); Mexico (September 16); Chile (September 18); and Belize (September 21). El Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) is also recognized on October 12 during the month-long celebration.

Hispanic Americans have been integral to the prosperity of the U.S. They are also integral to the very fabric of Unity Center of Miami. This month and always, we honor our congregants of Hispanic heritage.

NATIONAL GRANDPARENT'S DAY

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13TH

This holiday is to honor grandparents, the love they have for their grandchildren, and care for the younger generations.  We recognize the wisdom and guidance they offer and give so freely.

The history of this holiday started wtih Marian McQuade bringing attention to seniors in the 1970's.  President Jimmy Carter signed the first presidential proclamation for "National Grandparent's Day" in 1978, and now we officially celebrate them every year, on this day in September.  Love them a little more this year!

AUTUMN EQUINOX - FIRST DAY OF FALL

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22ND

Welcome, Fall! The Autumnal Equinox—also called the September Equinox or the Fall Equinox—occurs at the same moment worldwide.  The Equinox arrives on Tuesday, September 22nd at 8:04 P.M. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere.  The Sun crosses the celestial equator heading south, making day and night roughly equal in length across the globe.

Take a pause on this day and honor the change in Season.  Temperatures drop, plant life slows down, and so do we.  The trees are showing us that letting dead things go, can be a beautiful process, and is necessary for growth.

WORLD HEART DAY

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH

World Heart Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular disease and the importance of Heart Health.  This year, the theme is "Don't Miss a Beat."  The truth is, Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects more than 523 million people, almost double the figure of two decades ago, with one in three CVD deaths occurring prematurely in people under 70 years of age.  Today, we also honor those we have lost to Heart-related illness.
